Frontend Design Concepts
The chosen creative direction, and why it works — distinct from Design Constraints, which covers what we're boxed into rather than what we're choosing to build.
Day-to-Night Scroll Narrative
The homepage scroll follows the business's real daily rhythm — Group SUP → Private SUP → Sunset SUP → Twilight GLOW Paddle — with the background color shifting through a true spectral gradient as you scroll, landing in full darkness exactly when the real glowing paddleboards become the payoff.
Status: past proof-of-concept. Live in the real Next.js build at /site, with a real-time cursor-reactive water simulation as the hero, real typography (Fraunces + Work Sans), a measured and verified contrast fix (2.58:1 → 6.02:1 on the gold section), and real per-section composition — not the same template repeated. Also added to the Design Directions gallery as "Rainbow Channel."
Why it solves two problems at once
The client wants "rainbow" represented but explicitly rejected the site's current flat, stacked rainbow stripe (reads as a pride flag, not intentional branding). This reinterprets "rainbow" as the site's entire color journey — real spectral order, tied to an actual daily cycle — rather than a static graphic. Nothing on the page looks like a flag.
The conversion psychology
A standard services page puts a visitor in a "do I want to buy this?" frame — purchase-resistant. This structure puts them in a "which one do I vibe with?" frame instead — a selection mindset, not a resistance mindset. Every path still ends at a real Book Now button, but the frame getting there is fundamentally different. A genuine conversion advantage, not just an aesthetic choice.
Composition Per Section
The calm opening beat — photo block + text split, nothing dramatic yet.
A scattered cluster of photos rather than one clean frame — rising energy.
Full-bleed, text large and low over the horizon — the emotional turn.
Minimal text, the glow itself is the only bright thing — the climax lands harder because everything before it built density.
Learned the Hard Way
An earlier version of this concept forced the four services into four literal times of day (7am, 11am, sunset, twilight) without checking that against the actual confirmed service list first — Kayak Rental isn't even one of the four main services, and Group/Private don't have fixed hours. Same failure mode as an unsourced factual claim, just applied to a creative decision. Any future revision to this arc should be checked against Discoveries' confirmed service inventory before being treated as locked.
